Cycle 2 Extra Credit English I

Cycle II Extra Credit

This is your chance to show off your creative side.  Some of you may already be undercover authors, and some of you may have always wanted to write, but never found the avenue to express yourself. Well, this is your chance. You have several different options to choose from:

·      A short story (3 pages) about anything you want! Be creative, develop your character(s), add dialogue, or maybe an interior monologue, create your setting, conflict, resolution…anything you want! However, you must use figurative language [simile, metaphor, personification, etc.…] and at least 3 vocabulary words we’ve reviewed in class.
·      Create your very own comic book- Have you ever thought about creating your own superhero? If you have, now is the time to bring your character to life. Maybe you’ve thought about making yourself a comic book superhero or character. How would your character look? Does he/she have super powers? Is he a normal 9th grade freshman at ESHS by day, but then transformers into the Ironbound hero at night? Your comic must be at least 2 pages and 20 panels or boxes.

·       Poetry Book- Roses are red, violets are blue , writing is cool and so are you J  Compose 5 original poems and make your own poetry book. You can use free style form, a sonnet, haikus, anything you want! You can decorate your poetry book, type your poems, write them on construction paper…the choice is yours [Dr. Santos shout out]

Cycle II Extra Credit English III

Being a junior means many things, HSPA, SATs, and all that good stuff =). However, the fun part about junior year is COLLEGE! Looking for colleges, visiting schools, and learning more about which school is the perfect match for you. You have the opportunity to do some of the research while earning extra credit points for cycle II, sounds like a win win to me! This is what you will do. RESEARCH 2 colleges/universities that you are interested in. Then you post your findings so your peers could also learn about your 2 schools.

You will post:
·         School Name
·         Location
·         Population
·         SAT scores
·         GPA requirements
·         5 majors that school offers
·         Student Life

You must also write 1 paragraph telling me and your peers WHY you chose the schools you did and why you think they are a good match for you.

Due Date: Monday 2/3/2014

Your assignment is to write a review for August Wilson's play entitled "Fences." Reviews are written all the time after movie premieres, book publications, broadway performances, and album releases. So now it is your turn to be a critic =) Be creative with this! As we saw/read, the characters in Wilson's play are passionate and emotional, so it is your job to convey the same emotions in your review.(Refer back to the notes that you took in class about how to write a review) Please sign your name after the post, so I know who it is from. CNN debate: The N Word

This is the link to the CNN clip we watched in class today (12/19/2013) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rZYtNa890s You are to write a 1 paragraph response to the clip. This is your own reflection so make sure it is introspective and respectful. I suggest you re-watch the clip, because you might catch something the second time around that you missed while watching it in class. Think about when the N word is used. We've seen it in literature, we hear in music, on the streets and in the hallways, so now is your chance to comment and reflect on why the word is used and should it be used? After you write your reflection, please include your name as well. If you have any questions please e-mail me. See you Monday =)

New Beginnings :)

I have created this blog to serve as a form of communication from me to you, but also for you to use to post things to your classmates. I will be posting regularly and therefore some topics I will expect you to comment on for a grade, and other topics will be posted purely for your enjoyment :)

So how will this work? In class or through e-mail I will tell you when to check out our blog. If I tell you a comment is necessary then you will need to post your comment and sign your first and last name at the end, so I can give you credit for the assignment. If you have anything you want me to post email me at nrubinet@gmail.com. This could be almost anything. Maybe you want to remind your classmates about an event after school or maybe you just want your classmates to read something you have written and want our feedback. I will post your topic either with your name by it or anonymously. Let’s make it a great year!

It is today that we must create the world of the future.
